Public Service Training

The Government of Nunavut (GN) regularly provides on-going workplace training and development courses to GN employees across Nunavut, coordinated by the Public Service Training (PST) division of the Human Resources Department. Training courses tends to be high level, focuses on skills applicable to most GN employees, or targeting large occupational groups.  It aims to improve the overall skills and abilities required in public servants’ current positions as well as encourage career development. Ultimately, workplace education and training enhance the services that GN employees provide to Nunavummiut.

Training that are specialized and specific to certain occupational groups such as nurses, social workers and teachers, are the responsibility of the applicable departments. Departments are able to access the yearly GN Training funding for additional funding (if needed) to provide specialized training. 

Language training is coordinated and provided by the Department of Culture and Heritage that also post their courses on the GN Training Calendar. 

Departmental specific mandated training such as IT awareness training, health and safety, Records Management, and ATIPP, is coordinated and provided by the specific and applicable department that is responsible to offer these types of training.  These courses are often posted on the GN Training Calendar or promoted though the GN Information bulletins. 

What kinds of courses are offered by the Public Service Training division?

Learning and development courses focus on variety of topics , including but not limited to:

  • administrative skills
  • communication skills
  • computer skills
  • financial management
  • supervision and leadership
  • project management
  • language, culture and history 
  • wellness

What is the format for learning and development courses?

Courses are delivered in a classroom setting as well as online.

Who delivers the training?

Courses are delivered under contracts with qualified and experienced instructors and training companies.

What courses are being offered now?

All of the current course offerings are listed on the Training Calendar and are made available to GN employees. The calendar is regularly updated and new courses are added throughout the year.  Make sure to check in periodically for new course offerings.
