Labour and Employment Standards

The Labour Standards Compliance Office and the Labour Standards Board protect workers rights in Nunavut.

The Labour Standards Compliance Office safeguards the minimum conditions of employment for employees in Nunavut covered by the Labour Standards Act and related regulations. The Act does not apply to Government of Nunavut employees, federal government employees, or workers in federally regulated industries such as airlines, banks, and most telecommunications operations.

The Labour Standards Officer serves both employers and employees by providing information on their rights and responsibilities under the Labour Standards Act and its regulations. The officer also issues permits, receives labour standards complaints, conducts inspections, and makes orders on contraventions of the Act and regulations.

The Labour Standards Board hears appeals from employers and employees on decisions made by the Labour Standards Officer in relation to their rights and responsibilities.

Members of the Labour Standards Board are appointed by the Minister of Justice through a competitive process.
