National Child Day 2021
On November 20, the Department of Education is asking Nunavummiut to join others around the world in recognition of National Child Day.
National Child Day is celebrated in recognition of Canada’s commitment to upholding the rights of children and two historic events: the 1959 signing of the UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
By ratifying the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991, Canada made a commitment to ensure that all children are treated with dignity and respect. This commitment includes the opportunity for children to have a voice, be protected from harm, be provided with their basic needs and have every opportunity to reach their full potential.
National Child Day is about celebrating children as active citizens who can and should meaningfully contribute to decision-making. This day celebrates children as active participants in their own lives and their communities.
