Plumber/OBM/Stationary Engineer

Reporting to the Facility Manager, the Plumber/OBM/Stationary Engineer will provide primary responsibility over the technical, operational, and maintenance services and support for the water/sewer treatment facilities, piped water/sewer distribution system, preventative maintenance, and repairs for all major Government of Nunavut facilities such as utilidor, all schools, Kivalliq regional Health center, other major GN assets in Rankin Inlet and the region. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining boilers and travel will be required to other communities to complete inspections and repairs.  This position impacts on the efficiency of the Government of Nunavut and services to other departments and the public by identifying deficiencies and repair accurately to prevent safety hazards to the GN and the public.

The Plumber/OBM/Stationary Engineer will perform daily checks on pump houses, sewage treatment plant, lift stations, Health Center, Schools, NAC and other GN facilities.  Fill out Operator’s reports and checklists, check the system operation for buildings with DDC controls, remove solid waste from sewage treatment plant, collect water samples for bacterial testing, work with trade staff and oversee casual staff and contractors, complete preventative maintenance checks, order materials, conduct inspections on work performed by contractors, and maintain inventory of spare parts for all facilities and equipment.  This position will supervise and train apprentices and casual employees, work with the supervisor to identify sealift supplies, maintain housekeeping practices in work areas, closing, and locking access vaults to prevent tampering and safety for neighborhood children, while following safety rules and procedures.   

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through certification as a Journeyman Plumber or Oil Burner Mechanic with a minimum of three (3) years’ related experience in the trade as a member or leader of a team.  5th Class Stationary Engineer Certificate is required to meet the minim regulatory requirement for maintaining a heating plant over 750K watt; Experience supervising staff or contractors; Experience with a variety of building types and sizes or municipal works; Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent) and several years’ experience working with DDC controls, from daily operations to replacement of defective DDC devices.

Knowledge of cold climate building systems, technical principles, code compliance, regulations and policies related to building construction and operations will be beneficial for this position.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
