The Iqaluit Airport is owned by the Government of Nunavut and operated Nunavut Airport Services Limited on its behalf under a 30-year Public Private Partnership (PPP) with the Government of Nunavut & Arctic Infrastructure Partners.

The Iqaluit Airport is located adjacent to the City of Iqaluit and is a hub airport for the Qikiqtani region. The 9,300m² airport terminal was completed in 2017, and services as a connection point between Nunavut communities and southern Canada.

Airport Description

The airport has:

  • One asphalt runway, taxiways and five aprons.
  • Runway (16/34) is 8,605 feet in length by 200 feet in width.
  • ARFF Services are available at Category 5, with the ability to increase to Category 7 with 12 hours of prior notice. Call our rates apply.
  • Apron 1 is available for general aviation and transient traffic.
  • Apron 4, Taxiway E, and the FOL site is restricted to military aircraft.
  • All paved surfaces have a PLR of 12 (ICAO PCN67 F.A.W.T.).
  • Jet fuel and limited supplies of 100LL avgas.  Aircraft refueling is provided by the Uqsuq Corporation, which can be coordinated directly or through the FBO.

Operating Conditions

The airport is available for:

  • 24 hours, seven days per week.
  • Both Day and Night VFR and IFR operations, with GNSS approaches and a Category 1 ILS.
  • Wide-body diversions, such as Airbus A380s and Boeing 747s.
  • Aircraft cold weather testing.

Hours of Operation

The airport has operational staff on-site during regular published hours. Call-out procedures are available outside of normal working hours. Normal operating hours are: 

  • Monday to Friday: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. local time
  • Saturday and Sunday: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time 

There is a minimum of 2 hours notice required for non-emergency requests. Please contact the airport help desk. 

Airport Fees

Additional fees may apply to services provided by the airport operator Nunavut Airport Services Limited outside normal operating hours. Please contact the Nunavut Airport Services Limited Help Desk to confirm additional fees.

Critical Aircraft

  • The critical (design) aircraft: Boeing 767-300.
  • Aircraft Group Number: IV (Code 4D under TP312 4th Ed.).
  • Aircraft larger than the critical aircraft may operate, but must comply with the Canadian Aviation Regulations.

Weather and Aircraft Advisory Services

The airport weather and aircraft advisory services are provided by the Flight Service Station (FSS). The FSS is managed by Nav Canada. The hours of operation are 24 hours, including hourly weather observations, with TAFs at 00, 06, 12, 18Z.

The Mandatory Frequency for Iqaluit Radio is: 122.2 MHz

Notes

  • Security fence inside runway strip.
  • Mountains 30’ 140’ ASL approximately 1,600’ SW & 2,400’ SE of 16 and mountains 65’ 139’ ASL approximately 3,000’ NW of 34.
  • Exemption to Aerodrome Standards & Recommended Practises (TP312) 3.1.6.7, and 8.6.1.1 regarding the installation of mobile Arrestor Gear during Royal Canadian Air Force & United States Air Force tactical fighter squadron deployments.
  • Runway strip/graded area reduced from 90m to 75m because of ditching (aeronautical study) Runway 34 approach lights AE category 1, high intensity lighting and “AS” for runway threshold identification lights.
  • Non-standard installation of ALS longitudinal interval is 30 metres instead of 60 meters.
  • Lighting intensity controls are in place, operated by local FSS.

At the Iqaluit International Airport, we aim to provide an inclusive and accessible airport environment.

Our Employees are Trained to Help

Employees and contractors at the airport are required to complete accessibility training appropriate to the requirements of their role and function at the airport. This training is a regulatory requirement of the Canadian Transportation Agency's Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Regulations and aims to prepare staff in all areas to assist travellers and visitors at the airport.

Curbside Assistance

The curbside zone is located at the Departures entrance.  In order to request assistance to or from the curbside zone and throughout the terminal, please contact your airline and inform them of your needs.

Mobility Aids

Wheelchairs are provided by Iqaluit Airport for use within the terminal for your convenience. Please note there is no electric cart service available. The Iqaluit Airport is wheelchair accessible and has ramps at all boarding gates as well as a portable aircraft ramp for embarking/disembarking the aircraft. The Iqaluit Airport provides designated priority seating for persons with disabilities at all boarding gates. Accessible washrooms are available throughout the terminal.

Service Animals

Certified service animals can accompany you at the Iqaluit International Airport, whether you're travelling or visiting other passengers.

Animal Relief Area

There are 2 Animal Relief Areas to accommodate service animals moving through the airport environment including: 

  1.  Outside the airport located near the arrivals entrance next to the designated smoking area. 
  2. After you have pass through security screening a service animal relief zone is located at the public washrooms by Gate 2.
