Kivalliq Road Project

Kivalliq Road Project

The Project

The Government of Nunavut is doing a study of a potential road connecting five communities in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut. This road would run over 725 km between Arviat, Whale Cove, Rankin Inlet, and Chesterfield Inlet along the west coast of Hudson Bay. It would also run to Baker Lake, located 320 km inland. The Government of Nunavut received assistance from the Government of Canada for this study. Nunami Stantec was hired to lead this study and complete preliminary design and cost estimates for the roadway.

The Roadway Route

Using previous route studies, the draft Nunavut Land Use Plan and information about permafrost, slopes, ground conditions, and the location of rivers, lakes and wetlands, the Nunami Stantec team has identified a preferred route for the roadway.

Alternatives have been identified for access into each community – more detailed maps show the proposed and alternative connecting roads into each community.
